World Superbike Weekend

OMG what fun!!!  Pretty much says it all.

I was long over due for a real vacation, where better to do then to a race.  I got to spend some quality time with a number of Uath SBA racers, who were just amazing.  They did a good job of convincing me that I need to move to SLC.  It was also the first time this season that I got to see a number of the CO racers.

The highlight of the weekend was play chauffeur to the WSBK announcers, Jonathon Green and Steve Martin.  They are fantastic guys, who were a lot fun and provided some great information.  I learned a few new things from Steve while driving around looking for Mustang parts.

SMRI Race #2

I couldn’t be more please with the races… well okay, yeah I could, but it was a good day.

I don’t know about working as Secretary for the club and racing, it would be okay if I had help getting things ready and if I had someone to set things up for me.  This having to setup everything and then go work and then go get ready to race, it a pain.  I need a pit crew, or maybe just a dedicated boyfriend.   It helped that Chaz, let me stay in his spare room the night before down in Abq, it lets me get an extra hour of sleep.  He and I changed my tires that night and got the wheels sorted out.  I had to pull off that front Mag wheel.  It appears to have a small bend in it,  there was a few other small things that he fixed for me so I would have to worry about it in the morning.  What can I say, he is an awesome friend!!!

In my first practice session, I was trying to get the suspension sorted out still.  I had gone back to the original settings, to see if there was chatter, with the stock wheel back on.  It was better, but there was still some vibration in the rear wheel.  So back in the pits we adjusted the rear rebound.  In the next session, it was a little worst, so back in and readjust the rear rebound.

Then time for my first race of the day.  Novice GTO, I was starting on the front row.  Not that it helps me any… since I still stink at launches, the concensus is that I launch even worst on this bike then the R6.    But, I made it up by the end of the first lap, I was in fourth.   I just kept hounding Luis and made a few attempts at passes and just couldn’t make them stick.  I have got to stop being such a whimp about the passes.  I had him and then I rolled off early and gave it right back to him.  I had him every time into turn 1 and again into turn 2 or 3.  I was starting to get pissed at myself, after I gave up in turn 1.  Turns out that on that next lap one of the new guys went down and they red flagged the race.   So in addition to it being a fun race, the scoring gets interesting.   First, one of the experts, got confused with the schedule changes and went out with us.. the novices…  so he finished in 2nd, but is DQ’d.  Then that comes to me and Luis,  even though he was in front of me for most of the race, I end up getting 2nd and he get 3rd… the last lap before the red flag… I crossed the S/F line before him and then lost it to him in turn 1.  It’s just wild, and I still wasn’t liking the suspension set up.  So we changed it again.

Bring on race # 2 AmGTU:  Not quite as intersting as the first, I got just as bad a start, had to work my way past a few people.  I ended up stuck behind another 675 and he was holding me up.  Don’t know what was going on with him, normally he is much quicker then that.  I dogged him a number of laps and then he ran wide into turn 1 and I went under him to get in front, it was at that point I put down my fastest lap time for the race.  I ended up with 6th.

Next up was the Nov GTU race,  not a bad race, but not exciting either,  I had yet another less then stellar launch.  I had a great view of myold R6 with Xen and Brian swapping it up.  Almost every turn they were trading spots, it was cool to watch.  I should have been a little more foucsed on my riding, but I just coasted around behind them.  After Xen finally got by and stuck it, I could should have tried to pass Brian as well, but I just let him go and settled for 4th.

My fourth race was the AM GTO race… or should we call it the beer race.  I at least launched in front of Doug, and kept him behind me for a while.  Then I blew 3 turns in a row and was just shocked that he hadn’t gotten by me yet.  I waited for him to go by and then I came off the track.  I figured with that many mistakes, I just wasn’t focusing like I should and it was hazardous to stay out there.  So I have to buy Doug beer now.. Drat!!!  It’s all good, I’ll get him later in the year once I really have the 675 sorted out and a grip on how to ride it, he won’t stand a chance.

The last was my favorite, Formula Femme.  It was a really light grid, the smallest I’ve ever seen for it.  I actually had a decent launch, I had the hole shot and that was it…. I lead from start to finish.  The thing that made it my fav was I lapped 3rd place twice and I was about 300 feet from lapping 2nd place.

Racing this Sunday

SMRI Race #2 Sunday May 23rd @ Sandia Speedway

Practice sessions start at 9am and racing will be under way by 11am.

I can’t wait to see how it goes!  I will need to set it up, quite a bit from last time to make up for the bad finishes and missing classes at the last one.  Not to mention there is a bet between one of the other races for a couple of cases of beer.  There is just no way I’m going to let him place in front of me.

Great Weekend of Riding!

Kudos to PJ’s and mostly to Aaron for getting the bike fixed and ready to go.

We had our 2nd race school on Sat.  There was 22 people signed up, but only 8 made it to the classroom session.  So it was a smaller group then last time, but it gave us more time to spend with each of the students.  Always a good thing.

It also gave us some time after the school to run the new configuration CCW, to make sure that it would be okay to run for the track day on Sunday.  I really like it.

Sunday was our 2nd track day for the season, we ran counter-clockwise and got to use the new section of track and the cross over that were put in for us this spring.  Wow!  It makes it much more technical and so much more fun.  Finally, we will get to use both sides of our tires without flipping them.

The 675 is just perfect for this track and it just ran fantastic.  I haven’t had that much fun doing a track day in some time.

It’s going to live!!!

Well, the bike is going to be just fine…

All the oil dumping into the radiator was due to a failed heat exchanger.  The parts on order and I should have my bike back for the race school on Sat.  Then I get to work on the suspention set up on Sunday during the track day.

I really can’t say enough good things about PJ’s, I dropped off the bike on Sunday on my way home.  They’ve gone above and beyond on everything that I”ve asked them to do.

Well, it was an interesting weekend…..

I really do love riding this bike (the toona), but so far it has kinda been one issue after another and I’m feeling the need to vent. The first outing it blew a counter shaft seal and puked oil. The next couple of times at the track went great.  It is a fantastic bike, that is so much easier to ride the the R6.  I’m really hoping that once we get everything sorted out that these kinds of things are not going to happen anymore.  I’ve finally finished making changes to the bike.  It’s just a matter of getting everything dialed in.

But this weekend, just was horrible! Not all the of the suckiness was to do with the bike, but it was the worst part.

In case anyone wants to know it is possible to use the Triumph quick shifter with woodcraft rearsets. However, it won’t work if you’ve by passed the clutch switch. Which just seems really stupid to me, since it is labeled for racing only. Why would I want to keep all that street crap on the bike, if it’s going to the track? So it won’t work unless you roll off the gas, again, dumb, what’s the point of a quick shifter if you have to roll off.

The trackday went fantastic!!!  It was the first time that we tried using control riders to deal with the riders that went off the track instead of the corner workers doing it.  That left them free to deal with the bikes that were still on the track and do the flaging that needs to be done.  I think it went great.  We only stopped the track to clean up some gas from one bike and for lunch.  Otherwise, there was just loads of track time.  It was fun helping some of the novices out, and working with them.

I spent the part of Sat, afternoon getting my suspension dialed in and it was working great! The bike really is a blast to ride, I was really looking forward to racing on Sunday, after that.

So the wheels that I had bought had issues. The front one worked fine, but the rear one the rotor drags against the caliper, of course I didn’t realized that until after I had the new rubber put on it and mounted it. So I had to have it taken off that wheel and put on to the stock wheel. So I wasted $$ and a lot of time getting the tires mounted and unmounted and remounted…. not to mention I missed dinner with the group because I was mucken’ with those dang wheels.

So I get back to the friend’s house where I’m staying, we all hang out and talk about bikes, then off to bed. I wake up at 3:30am, to throw up. Then again at 5, then it’s time to get ready to head to the track. So I’m Secretary for the club so I have to work registration, I had to leave a couple of time to go throw up some more…. Side note: red Gatorade is a really nice Technicolor when it comes back up….

I did make it out for my first race, I hung back as I wasn’t sure that I was going to be able to complete the race, but I did and it wasn’t too bad. I wasn’t last either, but that’s not saying much since I was about 8 seconds off my usual times.

By the time the second race came around, I was feeling better. I haven’t figured out how to launch this bike yet, but I did better then the first race, and was only running about 3 seconds off my pace. The bike felt great, I finished 4th.

So I get back to the pits, I’m putting on my rear warmer, when I noticed that there was fluid in my belly pan. I stuck my hand in and I couldn’t figure out if it was oil or water…. Pulled the pan off and it was oil.. mostly. But I couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. So I turn the bike back on ran it for a minute and turned it off. That’s when it started to run out of the overflow. We looked, and yuppers, there was oil in the coolant overflow. Pulled all the body work off and opened up the radiator and .. YES more oil in the radiator. So I checked the dip stick and it just barely showed that there was any oil.

I dropped the bike off with the Service manager on my way home, he is going to take it into work on Tuesday and start tearing into it to find out what is going on.  I have to say the Dealership (PJ’s Motorcycles)  has been fantastic about dealing with all my issues, and Aaron is working on sainthood…. I can be a pain, but he deals with it really well. I’m sure that he’s sorry that I have his moble number.
Best guess is that it’s a head gasket or the water pump. Yea! This bike only has 1248 miles on it. It just seems like a lot if issues, for a new bike… I’m really missing my R6 right now. Three years and it never gave me any problems.

First SMRI Track day on Sat and Race on Sunday

Wow, finally.  The first race weekend for my home club.  It feels like it is months over due.  It will be my first time working registration for the club, since I was elected to Secretary in Oct.

I can’t wait to try out the quick shifter, and I’m really hoping that they got everything in to do the 520 conversion so that I can re-gear the bike.

I’ve done something to the bike, so that it is different every time that I ride it, why would I want this weekend to be any different???  😉  At some point, I’ll be done making mods and then I will just have to concentrate on going faster, rather then re-learning how to ride the bike.

Practicing at Sandia on Tuesday was perfect for me.  I needed to get some of the rust off and figure out when my RP, BM, and lines were for this bike.  By the last session, I was very pleased with how the bike handled and think that I just might have a chance to be competitive with it this weekend.

Come on out and watch…

Sat. 8 to 4 and Sun. 8 to 5

First SMRI race school went off without a hitch

It was a fantastic day out at the track.  All of the students were great, tried hard, learned some new things and improved during the day.  Best yet, there wasn’t a single crash.

We also got to check out the new track configuration, it’s going to need a few more things fixed before we can race on it.

Almost done with all the mods to the bike.

The forks should be back from RaceTech early next week.  The last body work detail is done, I finally have my flag on the bike.

The the only things left are to re-gear with the 520 conversion, put the quick shifter on,  put the Dymag wheels on it, put the radiator garud on it and drop the rear ride hieght by by 3 mm.

Inaugural TI2TT track day at Inde Motorsports Ranch

It was back to Inde this month for Take It 2 The Track  Trackdays, at Inde.  I really wish that I lived closer.  It’s quite the drive for me from Santa Fe.  The drive out was smooth and without issues.  I will be really happy once they finish what ever it is that they are going to do with that road heading out there.  It is the one true down side to the location right now.   It wasn’t bad until like the last mile, then its just bumper then I would like.  I kinda expected to get there and find Aaron’s bike laying on mine.  It wasn’t, it actually didn’t move at all.  We dropped the trailer, there and talked to a couple of guys that were camping out, and then headed back into town to find some food and the hotel.

So as Control Riders we had to be there at the crack of dawn, it’s just wrong to have to get up and be on the road before the sun is up.  I have to say that for the first time at a new location everything went off really well and the fact that we started only a few minutes late was amazing, no worries though the first group got to make it up at the end of the day.  The whole day ran on time, from there on out.  It was really an awesome, no red flags and no serious injuries for the whole weekend.   The only time the track stopped was for the planned 15 minute break when they went out and picked up the bikes that had gone down.

Well, I was really hunger for track time so I made a point to ride with every C and B sessions and then did a few A sessions as well.  It was a blast watching some of the riders really improve through out the day.  I just love it when they come back in grinning after ya work with them.  I just needed to get more comfortable with that bike.  I can say that after riding something like 430+ miles over the weekend that I’m finally there.

It was cool and inspiring to watch Chris Peris blow on by me like I was standing still… and doing it on one wheel, as he powered it past me.  I just wish that I could have seen more then just one corner each time.  Very different lines than the rest of us, then again, we just ain’t that talented.

I’m hoping that I’ll get to the video that I took this week and see how much of it is useable.  I’m afraid that helmet cam was to far forward and didn’t get as much as I would have liked it to.  I know the one the back of the bike worked.  We’ll see what I end up with.

Now I have to ask myself if I really want to race SMRI this year or do I want to head over there for more weekends….. hum….
