A beloved heirloom hailing from Jesi, Italy, this mild-flavored variety is perfectly suited to marketing. In Italy it is called “snail cauliflower” for its funny twirled patterns. I got the seeds from Baker Seed Co. it did start off as a rather sad looking seedling, and only 2 of 8 survived to be planted outside. Of those 2 only one thrived, the other is still a rather sad looking plant that isn’t really doing much.

Now if the Romanesco Broccoli would show signs of growing a head. First noted by Italians in the 16th century, it is now catching the eyes of gourmet chefs. Cooked, ‘Romanesco’ has a delicious nutty flavor and a texture similar to cauliflower. Easier to grow for fall harvest as a warm spring may delay heads until fall.

I mean the plant is huge, even though it was a rather sad seedling too. It was tricky to get it to grow too. I only have one plant out of the 12 seeds I started.

The seeds for this one I got from Botanical Interests. I love the art work on the seed packages. Not to mention I’ve spent A LOT of time watching their youtube channel, reading the articles, it’s become my go to for information.

So why did I pick these to grow??? –> Fractals/Fibonacci/Mandelbrot

I’m going to blame it on my ex-husband, when we first got married, he had just changed his undergrad major to physics. One of the courses included fractals, this lead to creating Mandelbrot images on the first computer that he and I owed. It would take days to generate. We had a great deal of fun with it. If you are interested in more info you can keep reading I’ve pulled info from various websites using AI to explain it.

Both the Fibonacci sequence and fractals independently dictate how things grow efficiently in nature. The overlap causes them to be discussed together. Plants grow using spirals (guided by Fibonacci math) which inherently creates branching structures (guided by fractal geometry), such as the spiraling florets on a Romanesco broccoli.

They are not the same, however, they are connected. The Fibonacci sequence can be used to generate fractal-like structures, and Fibonacci numbers naturally appear within the math and geometry of complex fractals.

The Sequence vs. The Geometric Shape
Fibonacci Sequence: This is simply an ordered list of numbers where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones (0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8…).
Fractals: These are infinitely complex, self-similar geometric shapes that look the same at any level of magnification. The sequence of numbers does not have this infinite repeating geometry.

Where They Intersect
While the number line itself isn’t a fractal, they intertwine in a few key ways: The Fibonacci Spiral: When you draw squares with dimensions corresponding to the Fibonacci numbers, you can trace a logarithmic spiral through them. While the spiral itself is not a true mathematical fractal because it doesn’t repeat infinitely inward, it shares the same concept of self-similarity and scaling.

The Mandelbrot Set: Fibonacci numbers and the Golden Ratio are encoded deeply into the geometry of famous fractals like the Mandelbrot Set. If you count the branches and mini-buds on the Mandelbrot set, the Fibonacci sequence emerges in the mathematics.

Mandelbrot!! Wow!!! inside joke.

I’m so thrilled to see that my odd balled (fractal) cauliflower is actually growing!!!!!
