{"id":3692,"date":"2026-04-23T21:39:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T21:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/?p=3692"},"modified":"2026-04-24T22:27:43","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T22:27:43","slug":"garden-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/2026\/04\/23\/garden-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Garden update:  April"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Providing that everything doesn\u2019t get frozen in next few weeks.&nbsp; I should have some nice things to look forward to.&nbsp; Like these cool petunias:&nbsp; They are called Superbissima Giant Alba Petunias.&nbsp; They are one of the few things that I started January 1<sup>st<\/sup> that didn\u2019t die off when everything froze while I was at the Sooner cup.&nbsp;&nbsp; I have about 8 types of different petunia seeds that I\u2019m trying out this year.&nbsp; Can wait to see what they all look like when it\u2019s completely open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-11.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"676\" src=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-11.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-11.png 648w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-11-288x300.png 288w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I have a very ambitious plan for most of my weekends, his past one I potted up a whole bunch of my starts: Cucumbers, Pineapple Tomatoes, Pink Bumble Bee Tomatoes, Pink Jazz&nbsp; Tomato, Tropical sunset Pole Cherry tomatoes,&nbsp; Luffa Gourds, &amp;&nbsp; Nasturtiums.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the new starts, I was able to pull over 4lbs of worm castings from the worm bin!!!  I&#8217;ll be spreading the casting around to all the plants this weekend.  I also started some compost tea this week, so I have been watering everything with it all week.  I should have used it all up by the end of the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"603\" height=\"638\" src=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-23.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-23.png 603w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-23-284x300.png 284w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 603px) 100vw, 603px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I really should just breakdown and buy a turbo shifter for collecting the castings.  My back was pissed at me for days after I sat on the floor pulling the worms from the castings.  I also need to remember to not water the bin for a week before hand.  The castings were too wet, that&#8217;s why there were so many small worms at the bottom of the bag. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-24.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"561\" height=\"546\" src=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-24.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3714\" style=\"width:347px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-24.png 561w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-24-300x292.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of them weren&#8217;t ready but they will likely be this weekend. (Chervil, Celery, Summer Savory, Zinnias, Fennel, Charentais cantaloupe melon,&nbsp; Aji Cachucha peppers,&nbsp; Chocolate Beauty peppers, Mini Bell Pepper mix,&nbsp; Sweet Chocolate peppers, Thai Purple Ribbed eggplant,&nbsp; Black Beauty Eggplant, Romanesco Broccoli, Cauliflower De Jesi, Zebrune Shallot,&nbsp; and Thai Basil,) &nbsp; It\u2019s a lot of plants.&nbsp; I also wanted to start a few more for the season last weekend, like tomatillos, a few more flowers, along with more dill and cilantro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the heat mats showed up on Tuesday, they are germinating really fast. The eggplants and peppers are finally starting to show some more growth too. I guess it just wasn&#8217;t warm enough for them in the house. Not really a shocker, since I turned the heat off a couple weeks ago. Even though it&#8217;s still almost freezing at night, the house is still getting some sun inside during the day so the solar gain keeps it quite nice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most exciting thing is that I have some fruits forming on the lemon\/lime bush.&nbsp; Looks like there will be 4 lemons and 2 limes this go around. &nbsp;&nbsp;Once I\u2019m back from the work trip, I\u2019m going to start moving it outside for periods of time to get it ready to stay out there for the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-14.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"536\" height=\"429\" src=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-14.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-14.png 536w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-14-300x240.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 536px) 100vw, 536px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The sweet potato slips should be ready to go into pots this weekend. They have roots, I just need them to get a bit larger before I put them outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of outside\u2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They turned the water on down at the community garden, yippie.&nbsp; Now I am hoping that the asparagus will grow better, now that it is getting more water, same for the garlic.&nbsp; The plot looks much better with the border completed. &nbsp;&nbsp;I still need to work on the south plot.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-13.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"652\" src=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-13.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-13.png 624w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-13-287x300.png 287w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I might actually start on figuring out the irrigation this coming weekend too.&nbsp; I think I\u2019ll start with the section of yard on the east side of the house.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-12.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"632\" height=\"581\" src=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-12.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-12.png 632w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-12-300x276.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 632px) 100vw, 632px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019ll be the most straight forward section.&nbsp; There are just those troughs, two raised beds, 1 whiskey barrel and the one grow bag to deal with.&nbsp; It\u2019ll be easy to run the main line and feed off the other lines from it. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"641\" src=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-16-1024x641.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-16-1024x641.png 1024w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-16-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-16-768x481.png 768w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-16.png 1138w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the few lil things that were hiding behind that rain barrel\/chairs in the other picture. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The garage area should be easy enough.&nbsp; Like the east side, it\u2019s a main line with just some drip emitters coming off it for each pot. &nbsp;What makes the garage area more complicated is the number of lines I\u2019ll have to pull from the main line.&nbsp;&nbsp; There are a lot of individual pots here.&nbsp; Too many, I just can\u2019t help myself either, I keep adding more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-10.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"444\" src=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-10.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-10.png 624w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-10-300x213.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There is this one bed that I just finished setting up this week. That I\u2019ve decided to make into a \u201c3 sisters\u201d bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-15.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"330\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-15.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3699\" srcset=\"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-15.png 330w, https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/image-15-209x300.png 209w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 330px) 100vw, 330px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That means I\u2019ll try growing corn, squash and green beans.&nbsp; I kind of did that last year in the north plot minus the squash.&nbsp; I\u2019m just going to have to watch for the squash bugs invasion.&nbsp; That was the problem I had the last time I tried to grow watermelons in this area. &nbsp;&nbsp;I\u2019m also going to put a couple grow bags next to it with Fennel, maybe that will help keep them away. There was NO reason they had to make them sit 10 feet higher then mine.
