{"id":11,"date":"2009-11-30T16:23:34","date_gmt":"2009-11-30T23:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.diomederacing.com\/?page_id=11"},"modified":"2026-04-07T17:01:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T17:01:50","slug":"msf","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/diomederacing.com\/blog\/msf\/","title":{"rendered":"MSF"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This is how I learned to ride and I believe in the program enough to have be come an MSF RiderCoach (2007 &#8211; 2025).<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Learn To Ride:&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msf-usa.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation)<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 90%;\">Key Messages:<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>1.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Get trained and licensed<br>\n2. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Wear protective gear &#8212; all the gear, all the time &#8212; including a helmet manufactured to the standards set by the DOT<br>\n3. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Ride unimpaired by alcohol or other drugs<br>\n4. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Ride within your own skill limits<br>\n5. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Be a lifelong learner by taking refresher rider courses&nbsp; &#8212; Keep learning and working on riding skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">QUICK TIPS: General Guidelines For Riding A Motorcycle Safely<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be visible:<\/strong><br>\n\u2022 Remember that motorists often have trouble seeing motorcycles and reacting in time.<br>\n\u2022 Make sure your headlight works and is on day and night.<br>\n\u2022 Use reflective strips or decals on your clothing and on your motorcycle.<br>\n\u2022 Be aware of the blind spots cars and trucks have.<br>\n\u2022 Flash your brake light when you are slowing down and before stopping.<br>\n\u2022 If a motorist doesn\u2019t see you, don\u2019t be afraid to use your horn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dress for safety:<\/strong><br>\n\u2022 Wear a quality helmet and eye protection.<br>\n\u2022 Wear bright clothing and a light-colored helmet.<br>\n\u2022 Wear leather or other thick, protective clothing.<br>\n\u2022 Choose long sleeves and pants, over-the-ankle boots, and gloves.<br>\n\u2022 Remember \u2013 the only thing between you and the road is your protective gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Apply effective mental strategies:<\/strong><br>\n\u2022 Constantly search the road for changing conditions.Use MSF\u2019s Search, Evaluate,<br>\nExecute strategy (SEE) to increase time and space safety margins.<br>\n\u2022 Give yourself space and time to respond to other motorists\u2019 actions.<br>\n\u2022 Give other motorists time and space to respond to you.<br>\n\u2022 Use lane positioning to be seen; ride in the part of a lane where you are most visible.<br>\n\u2022 Watch for turning vehicles.<br>\n\u2022 Signal your next move in advance.<br>\n\u2022 Avoid weaving between lanes.<br>\n\u2022 Pretend you\u2019re invisible, and ride extra defensively.<br>\n\u2022 Don&#8217;t ride when you are tired or under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.<br>\n\u2022 Know and follow the rules of the road, and stick to the speed limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Know your bike and how to use it:<\/strong><br>\n\u2022 Get formal training and take refresher courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Call 800.446.9227 or visit www.msf-usa.org to locate the Motorcycle Safety<br>\nFoundation hands-on RiderCourseSM nearest you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022 Practice. Develop your riding techniques before going into heavy traffic. Know howto handle your bike in conditions such as wet or sandy roads, high winds, anduneven surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Remember:<\/strong> Give yourself space. People driving cars often just don\u2019t see<br>\nmotorcycles.
