Moab II

The second day of riding wasn’t overly exciting, as everyone was tired from the long day.  We all slept in, I mean what’s a vacation if you don’t get to sleep in?  Then there was brunch in town, followed by hitting the store to get some supplies, and gas for the bikes.  By the time we got back it was kind of hot out and the guys had left without me to go ride fins and things.  I really wanted to work on the bikes set up, since all day yesterday it felt like I was riding a pogo stick.  So I geared up and took off by myself to go play.  I decided to make a bunch of changes and then ride a short section of fins and things by myself.  I was a bit nervous about it, but figured that there was so many people around that I’d be fine or at least I’d be able to find help quickly if I needed it.

I got to the trail head and there was 4 razrs getting ready to start up the hill.  So I waited for them to go.  It occurred to me as I was watching them, that it was the first time I had ridden any dirt bike by myself.  I at least had the fore thought to turn my SPOT on and tell Mikrow that I’d be gone about two hours.  I hadn’t grabbed my phone though, and I should have.   I followed the razrs for about 3 minutes and decided that they were going way too slow and I’d have to work too hard to stay behind them, so I found a nice spot to go around them.  It was a smart move; I actually managed all of the obstacles without any problems until I got to the next camp site, where the trail split.  I started up a very steep rock face and found part way up that I needed to make a sharp turn to the right.  I was carrying too much speed to make the turn and stalled the bike at the top and slipped back down the hill.  I don’t know how but I managed to keep it up right until it stopped sliding.  I then got off and dragged it back over to the trail.  Got lined up, got back on the bike and then tried it again.  I was so pleased with myself for getting all sorted out without help that I figured I should quit while I was ahead.  So when I got to the next bail out spot I did just that.

I wasn’t ready to head back to camp, so I took off and headed up the road, I figured I find out just how far it went.  It was so much cooler as I climbed that I just kept going, until I hit a T intersection.  I turned around and headed back knowing I’d been gone more than two hours.  Part way back I ran into the guys and they were heading back out the way I had just been so I went with them.  We explored the passes until we found snow.  Then it was a nice ride back around into town for a late lunch and back to the camp for a late dinner and hanging out around the fire.
