This is what I’m looking for.
Those lil cocoons will turn into 1-5 baby worms depending on the species of worm. I keep looking for them, but I’m not finding them in my bin. It could be that they are smaller, than those in this image. I believe that I have mostly Indian Blues in my bin. Since I ordered from a supplier that sells a red worm mix. I wasn’t really aware of this when I placed the order. Read Carefully when ordering. Do some research on the supplier you are ordering from!!
Monday night, I “fluffed” the bedding up in the bin. I gave them some worm chow about 3 days before, I wanted to see if it was gone before I added in the cucumbers I had in the compost jar. I also wanted to see if the bedding was too wet. I had removed the bottom cover to see if the was liquid coming out. Sign that the bedding was too wet, it was the opposite, the bedding at the bottom was bone dry. I scooped out a couple of handfuls it was all really dry. I did add a fair amount of rainwater to the bag. Might have over done it, since a day or so later there was a pool of water in the mortar tray I have under the bag. Really, happy, I decided to put that there. I don’t want that all over my tile floor. ick.
While I was fluffing the bag, I noticed that I had a REALLY small wiggly thing on my hand in a couple of places. I panicked at first, thinking I had mites in the bag…. but they were really tiny tiny worms!!! My guess is they had just hatched!! How exciting!
You can see from the picture above that the last feeding has some of those pepper seeds sprouting. The jute mat I have over the top of the worms is starting to fall apart. I guess it tastes good. I have another one I’ll save for a bit before I put in out there. Maybe I’ll grab a few of the jute ones from tractor supply…. Not much of that worm chow was left either. I will take the presence of baby worms to mean that I’m doing an okay job with this bin. Yippiee.
