I was lucky enough to have people pitted around me with campers, this gave me access to ice packs. I was even more thankful for being give a spot in a camper to sleep that night instead of in my trailer. About 12am my wrist woke me up and I discovered that I couldn’t feel my fingers. I was pretty sure it was due to the swell that was now really obvious. So I got up and pulled out one of the ice packs. After about 10 minutes, the feeling started to return to my fingers. This pretty much set the tone for the rest the of night. Every 2 hours getting up to ice my wrist. So much for sleep, it’s over rated anyway. Come 6am I gave up and went for a shower.
Then it was to the task of setting up for the day, taking care of registration again for the day, finishing grids and then trying to fit in a practice session on both bikes to see if I was able to ride. I quickly discovered that it was about the same, and I’d lose the feeling in my hand by the third lap. I am amazingly stubborn and prove to bad judgement, so I decided to scratch out of 5 races and only do one class with each bike. The 250SS and Fourmula Femme, I’ve gotta defend my title there. If I can win it again this year it would make 5 years in a row! That’s worth trying for.
I got a great start in the 250 class, then I slowly drifted off the pace and back as I lost the ability to use my left hand as I needed to. Oh well. I was still a lot of fun and I wasn’t last.
The FF race I had planned on just leaving the bike in 3rd gear, and see how it went. But, once Tracy got in front of me I just couldn’t stand it. I had to pass him back and keep him there. By the end of the race, my hand still had some feeling, in it so it was better then it was in practice. I’ll take it as a good sign.
Packing up up at the end of the day was interesting.
I did head in to see my Doc toward the end of the day on Monday, the Xray showed two hairline fractures in my wrist, nothing that was bad enough to justify a cast. He said, just to take it easy and use the brace that I had on if it helped. I decided to be good and let the wrist have time off, so no riding into work, no dirt bike riding over the holiday wknd. No riding over to AZ to ride hwy 191, and no Sipau shindig the last wknd of May. I was just hoping that it healed up enough to go riding in Alaska in June with my BFF from high school.
